The native house of the Dubrovnik Primorje

The native house of the Dubrovnik Primorje in Slano is a newly opened renovated space that is a central place for gathering, education and socializing of the local population, but it is also a unique space with a rich cultural exhibition offer intended for visitors from all over the world who want to get to know the local culture. The native house is located in the premises of the Parish Hall, which is a valuable protected asset, which the Dubrovnik diocese gave to the municipality for fifty years of use. The building itself was demolished and destroyed during the Croatian war of Independence, and the local authorities, in cooperation with other local stakeholders, restored it and put it into a social and touristic function.

The native house is designed to provide all visitors with an insight into the extremely rich history and tradition of living in the area of the Dubrovnik Primorje. Most of the objects on display are various artefacts of material cultural heritage, mostly collected by citizens. The display is not final and is constantly updated, which makes this museum modern and up-to-date. During the tour, visitors will be able to see early Christian sarcophagi, learn interesting facts about the rich maritime tradition and the nearby Rector's Palace in Slano, as well as see a whole series of ethnographic exhibits, of which examples of folk costumes from the Dubrovnik region and various jewellery and ornaments stand out. There is also a collection of models of ships through which visitors can learn about ships and the life of sailors of the Dubrovnik Primorje, and it is definitely worth seeing a 3D representation of the altar of the Adoration of the Kings.

The native house is not only a museum of exhibited artefacts, but also a social and cultural centre of coastal life, so on the ground floor there is a hall for lectures, cultural events and scientific meetings. On the first floor there are accommodation units for lecturers, artists, curators and guests, while on the second floor there is a multimedia hall intended for culture and education, but at the same time it is also a gallery space. All of this together makes the native house a unique project in the Dubrovnik-Neretva County, fully focused on the evaluation of heritage on the one hand and the simultaneous interpretation of that heritage in the contemporary context of the Dubrovnik Primorje as a living space of tradition and modernity, heritage and tourism.

FUN FACT: Slano was once an important port of the Republic of Dubrovnik. Its shipping and maritime history is great and famous. Today, Slano is home to an important marina equipped with catering and supply facilities, which is the starting point for touring and enjoying the Elaphite Islands.
