The Island of Mljet

According to the British Time magazine, Mljet belongs to the ten most beautiful islands in the world and is the only European island in that group. This is an island of special features and contrasts whose north-western part is a National Park. It has a unique natural beauty, centuries-old pine forests, large and small lakes and a cultural and
a historic heritage – the magnifi cent ancient palace and the 12th century Benedictine monastery are on the islet of St Mary.

This greenest of Croatian islands, ancient Melita, has hosted visitors from mythology and history, Odysseus and the nymph Calypso, the Apostle Paul, the poet Oppian, the Roman Emperor Augustus, Dubrovnik noblemen, the Benedictines, and many others who sailed to its shores.

Mljet is well-known for its cultural heritage, picturesque folk costumes, handicrafts, folk dances and original folk melos.
