The Island of Korcula

From the quay in Orebić on the peninsula of Pelješac, the ferry takes you to the island of Korčla, the ancient Korkyra Melaina, or Corcyra Nigra – Black Korčula.

Situated in the Pelješac Channel, the island of Korčula, with a main town of the same name, has preserved many buildings and has a valuable cultural heritage and a long maritime, shipbuilding and stone-quarrying tradition. Korčula is a picturesque Mediterranean town of narrow streets, valuable churches, magnifi cent palaces and mansions and is the putative native town of the famous world traveller Marko Polo. It also offers the chivalrous Moreška sword-dance and is a celebrated tourist destination.
